元気１復習

 痩せる　ー　やせる　ー　to become thin
痩せています　ー　to be thin

 太る　ー ふとる　ー　to gain weight
太っています　ー　to be fat

 勤める　ー　つとめる　ー　to work for

 彼女は痩せるになりたい
痩せるになるためにあまり食べない

 会社に勤めている

 別に＋negative = not...in particular

 別に悪い事じゃない　ー　it's not a crime (to do so...it's not a big deal, etc).

 よかったら　ー if you like (if it's good)

 背が低い　ー　ひくい　ー　is short

 あの人は背が低い

 お兄ちゃんは背が低くない、背が高い
て forms for joining sentences
used for adjectives, nouns, etc.

 いーadj
安い　ー＞　安くて
いい　ー＞　よくて　（irr）
元気（な）ー＞元気で
日本人　ー＞　日本人で

 The food at that restaurant is inexpensive and delicious
あのレストランの食べ物は安くて美味しい
That person is always energetic and fun to be with
あの人はいつも元気で楽しい
prof. yamashita is japanese and is about 40 years old
山下先生は日本人で40歳ぐらい

 Verb stem + に行く
Used when a person goes to a place to perform an action. The pattern is
destination {に｜へ} purpose に{　行く｜来る｜帰る}

 verbs need to be in stem form

 I went to a store to buy a bag
デパートにカバンを買いに行った

 I come to Japan to study Japanese
私は日本に日本語を勉強しに来ました

綺麗な夕日 昔、私は乾燥した砂漠に住んでいた。あの所で雨が全然降らなかった。水がなかったし、暑かったし、泥棒がいっぱいだったし、生活が難しかった。あの日濃い黒雲があったが風と雨がなかった。嵐の前の静けさだった。遠方に泥法が立っていた。私はあの泥法にお金を盗んだから、落とし前をつけたかった。あの泥法が走っていったが彼は黒雲の雷に撃たれた。私は嵐を避けて近くの納屋に逃げ込んだ。嵐はもっと激し くなってきた。その後、嵐はやんだ。遠方に綺麗な夕日を見えた。 「あの世千日この世一日」だと思った Some helpful terms: To say something like "arid desert" in English, "arid" is simply an adjective that describes the noun "desert". In Japanese,  乾燥 is actually a verb that uses する. If you put it into its past tense, you can use it as an adjective: 乾燥した砂漠 (かんそうしたさばく） 湿った森 (しめったもり）　- damp or wet forest 嵐の前の静けさだった (arashi no mae no shizukesadatta) "it was the calm before the storm" 遠方に... Causative Sentences (元気第２２課)

Today, I'm going to practice causative sentences from chapter 22 of Genki 2. These are used to describe situations where someone lets another group or person do something, or where someone makes someone do something. Contrast this with passive forms, which tend to describe something that happens to someone. Let's learn YET ANOTHER conjugation. This is extremely similar to the passive form, except: instead of ーられう　it's ーさせる ーあれる　　is ーあせる くる　ー＞　こさせる する　ー＞　させ る The teacher made the students read the textbook 先生は学生に教科書を読ませた。 as the book mentions, if one of the helping verbs てあげる、てもらう、てくれる is used with a causative verb, it means the sentences has a connotation of "letting" someone do something. The professor did not allow me to speak in English 先生は私に英語を話させてくれなかった

Adjective + する

This pattern is useful for describing a change in something. To say that it has become cold, you can say: 寒くになりました similarly, become good at something is: 上手になる You can also combine with する　instead of なる, in order to say "to make" For instance: 冷たくする -> to make something colder コーヒーを冷たくする - make the coffee colder 簡単にする -> make something simpler/easier 数学を簡単にして下さい -> please make mathematics easier! (to understand) How would you say, "Please make the next exam easier, because the last one was too difficult" 前回の試験は難しすぎたから、次の試験を簡単にしてください or この間の試験は難しすぎたので、次の試験はやさしくしてください I made the room clean 部屋をきれいにした I want to make my hair look like Daniel Craig's 髪をDaniel Craigみたいにしたい make it quiet 静かにしてください All in all, it's a pretty simple and useful grammar to know.
