~てほしい

Whenever you want or "wish" for someone to do something, you can request it by marking that person with に, putting the verb into its て form, and then adding ほしい to the verb.

I want my sick friend to get well
私の病気の友達に元気になってほしいです

I wanted my friend to help me with my homework
私の友達に宿題を手伝ってほしかった

When saying that you do NOT want someone to do something, you have two choices:

1) negate ほしい into ほしくない

2) leave hoshii alone, and negate the verb before putting it in its te form

For that previous example, if we said we don't want our friend to help us with our homework, we could say either:

私は友達に宿題を手伝ってほしくない

or

私は友達に宿題を手伝わないでほしい

Now's a good time to quickly review some different ways of saying "want" in the ol' 日本語

1) - たい
I want to drink coffee
コーヒーを飲みたい
I want to be the best
最高になりたい (or 最&高になりたいの, if you're Kyary :)

2) nounが欲しい (ほしい)I want noun
I want new shoes
新しい靴が欲しい

3) verb~te + hoshii - I want someone to do something
I want her to call me
私は彼女に電話をしてほしい
